ZGF Architects and PoSI teamed up to provide a concept submission for the International Living Future Institute’s 2011 Living City Design Competition which has been recently awarded a People’s Choice Award voted by the attendees of the Living Future 2011 conference.

Their submission entitled Symbiotic Districts: Towards a Balanced City explores the symbiosis between five EcoDistricts in Portland, Oregon as well as regional systems and examines how strategies in a single district contribute to the city’s overall performance.

As the building blocks of cities, neighborhoods are the right scale to accelerate sustainability — small enough to innovate quickly and big enough to have a meaningful impact. Yet in a city, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and neighborhoods balance assets like water and energy between each other to meet city-wide needs. Our approach explores the symbiosis between five EcoDistricts in Portland and how strategies in a single district, Gateway, contribute to the city’s overall performance.

Neighborhoods are the building blocks of cities — semi-autonomous areas where people build their lives and root their identities. Neighborhoods are also the right scale to accelerate sustainability — small enough to innovate quickly and big enough to have a meaningful impact. This link between people and scale makes neighborhoods the most critical “intervention points” within cities to identify and develop sustainability strategies. Called EcoDistricts, they provide the very ingredients needed in a resource-constrained world: the harvesting of water and energy, the production of food, the ability to move freely and affordably without a car, and careful stewardship and reprocessing of materials.

Yet in a city, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. While neighborhoods provide the right scale to accelerate sustainability, they regularly behave differently from each other and display unique characteristics. These unique traits can be an asset, providing a set of resources to share across a city. A neighborhood prone to flooding can supply fresh water to neighborhoods that run dry. Or a district with ample sun exposure can fuel a downtown that consumes more than its solar potential. Between them, districts create balance — the yin and yang of urban resources. The result is a city in symbiosis with its districts giving and taking resources from one another to maximize the performance of the whole.

Our approach is rooted in Portland. The city has long been a laboratory to investigate how civic investments lead to urban livability. Some of our greatest neighborhoods, like St. Johns and Lents, were once independent towns, establishing personal identities, economies and infrastructure. A history of policy leadership, like the landmark land-use planning precedent in Senate Bill 100, set in motion a series of progressive institutional leadership that inspired Portland’s sustainability culture.

These best practices include:
• Build on the inclination of the community – a heavy dose of DIY
• Support small and local economies
• Develop densely
• Provide regional and local transportation while encouraging active transportation
• Manage growth of urban areas to protect natural resources and food production
• Recycle and recover resources from the waste stream

Building on this experience, Portland provides fertile ground to pilot the next generation of best practices in urban sustainability. The Portland Sustainability Institute is leading the EcoDistricts Initiative in 5 pilot districts to accelerate the city’s sustainability performance. As resource constraints become more pressing, each district provides opportunities to move people, process water, make energy or produce food.

Across the City, our approach illustrates how neighborhoods’ complementary characteristics create a sustainable whole.

Low Carbon Future City / SBA Design

In 2005, the Chinese government announced its target to reduce energy consumption per GDP unit by 20% by the year 2010. After a €300 billion investment over five years, that target has been reached. The Chinese Climate Protection Program laid out goals to increase energy efficiency, development of renewable energies and promotion of energy savings while reducing pollutant emissions and strengthening environmental protection. The “Future City” by SBA Design marks these achievments with a design that promises low-carbon, economic and energy design and manages to support the climate protection process efficiently.

The planning of the future city is developed on the tourism island of Hainan. Yinggehai, the planning region, is located in the south-west of Hainan and in total covers an area of 176.2 sqkm. The focus area covers 42.8 sqkm; it is one of the most saline areas of the region and is mainly used for salt production by the use of salines. The main themes of the “low-carbon city” are the storage and production of renewable energy and its distribution for use according to demand, in terms of a “smart city”. Low-building heights and eco-tourism are incorporated into the concept.

The architects developed authoritative guidelines for this. A rural-urban interaction, “glo-cal DNA city” and a city of responsibility. This means that each inhabitant shall contribute their share to the city. Ecological awareness shall characterize and continuously develop the city. The basis for this is provided by the urban design concept of a “theme city”. In addition to the common mixed uses such as living, working, shopping and leisure, the master plan provides for each district a center within the city, with nine “units” each and a deﬁning district function, e.g. environmentally-friendly industries and ecological living. The city districts shall operate independently on a daily level and be interconnected by special themes.

Public and green spaces in the form of squares, parks, green axes and canals make possible a life in a natural environment which all the while retains its urban character. The transportation network closely follows the pattern of the salines. The network within the island-like districts is tailored to pedestrians. The road cross section favors pedestrian and bicycle paths as well as bus lanes. The concept of local public transport exceeds what is conventionally held as possible. Here the Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system will be used. The energy concept uses solar and wind energy as well as rain water, recovery of water resources and energy generation from biological waste. Photovoltaic technology is particularly efﬁ cient in this area. With approximately 300 days of sun per year, an energy potential of 1628-1861 kWh/(qma) is possible. The aim is to create a new urban, local and energy-efﬁcient city landscape, by introducing a new and appealing architecture.

The competition requires the following: environmentally-friendly industries, cultural, information and tourism centers and ecological community buildings, a conference center, exhibitions, marine installations and an off-shore ﬁ nancial center. In this way, the city of the future resembles an organism – which continuously regenerates itself.

Remplazando la estación de carros públicos del pueblo de Juncos, se intenta crear una conexión entra la plaza público y el río. Crean un dispositivo urbano que se amolda al terreno y le añade una serie de programas al lugar como por ejemplo un centro turístico, una plaza de mercado y una escuela de bellas artes en otros. El fragmento funciona de entrada al camino peatonal que llega a la parte más rural de la región. Funciona también como proveedor de agua para los diferentes cultivos urbanos localizados en la zona como también para el control de inundaciones.

Desde una mirada atenta alrededor del edificio, como quien recorre las fachadas urbanas del Museo Brasileño de Escultura (mube), que dan a una avenida que relaciona dos de los centros de la ciudad y a una calle de barrio, se ve que el proyecto se apropia íntegramente de lo que se podría llamar la 'geomorfología' del terreno. El mube se configura así como desvelando la 'naturalidad' inexpresiva de la esquina de un barrio elegante de la ciudad de São Paulo, su volumétrica geometría inherente y el desnivel entre las dos calles, anteriormente oculto.

Comprenderlo, por tanto, a partir de la visión constructiva, hace que la obra, después de construida, vuelva evidente la inteligencia del proyecto: al nivel del entorno, un espacio urbano plaza para esculturas al aire libre y que alberga un teatro abierto, un estanque de agua y jardines, concebidos por Roberto Burle Marx como muestra ejemplar del conocimiento artístico y científico del jardín en Brasil;(1) abajo, redibujando el terreno y así aprovechando el desnivel entre las dos calles, como falso subsuelo, un edificio que acoge exposiciones temporales, pinacoteca, oficinas de administración, depósitos, cafetería y una sala de actos.

Un tratamiento de cubiertas completamente verde fue la estrategia implementada para el edificio del School of Art and Media de la Universidad Tecnológica de Nanyang en Singapur. El proyecto desarrollado por CPG Corporation cuenta con 5 pisos combinando una forma orgánica y vegetal relacionando estructura, paisajismo, tecnología de punta y simbolismo asiático.

La fachada de vidrio otorga al edificio un alto rendimiento energético reduciendo las ganancias solares y la carga calórica, junto con entregar los beneficios de abundante luz natural y vistas a los espacios interiores. El muro cortina permite una gran visiblidad desde y hacia los exteriores lo cual refuerza la idea de integración entre entre las aulas y los patios exteriores.

Una de las particularidades de este proyecto es su especial tratamiento de cubiertas, lo cual lo diferencia del resto de los edificios del campus, difuminando los limites entre paisajismo y edificio. El proyecto está compuesto por dos volúmenes concavos hacia un patio interior, cubiertos por una techumbre verde que aisla eal edificio ayudando a temperar el ambiente, controlando y conservando las aguas lluvias para la mantención del paisajismo exterior.

Beton Hala Waterfront: Arches from the Past & Green Slopes

Proposal by Sanzpont Arquitectura for the Beton Hala Waterfront. Arches of the Belgrade Fortress have been reinterpreted to form a modern and iconic arcade linking the past with the present and future. The Green Slopes from Kalemegdan Park have been the main inspiration for creating a green building to expand the city’s natural landscape. Sava River Waveforms spread inland to create an elevated panoramic walkway integrated with the existing building.

Urban Design: A Park that brings together Visitors and Locals

Kalemegdan Park Expansion to the River Sava by a green roof building that extends the garden and recreational areas of the city. The green skin minimizes environmental impact, preserving the natural landscape of the site. Urban Connections to the City’s Past and Present where pedestrians can move freely in all directions without crossing with cars and trains. Through a central plaza, the project creates an urban node and a reference point that connects all the spaces. Scenic viewpoints at different levels that take advantage of views of the river and the city, making the journey a pleasant walk.

El estudio b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos, autor del Mercado dels Encants (actualmente en construcción) y de la Torre Agbar junto a Jean Nouvel Ateliers, llevarán a cabo la revitalización del frente portuario de 2,5 km de longitud de Porto Alegre (Brasil) en colaboración con Jaime Lerner Arquitectos Associados. El proyecto tiene por objetivo transformar el denominado Cais Mauá, actualmente en desuso y decadencia, en un centro de negocios, cultura y ocio con motivo de la Copa del Mundo 2014. El plan de negocios tiene un coste estimado de 198 millones de euros y permitirá dinamizar la antigua zona portuaria.

La intervención se realiza sobre un área de 181.000 metros cuadrados en la que se inserta un business park, además de un hotel y un centro comercial proyectado bajo criterios de sostenibilidad. Asimismo, el proyecto contempla la trasformación de los antiguos tinglados del puerto –construidos en 1920– en espacios de restauración y comercio, salvaguardando la imagen original de las edificaciones portuarias. La actuación arquitectónica hace especial hincapié en el respeto por el patrimonio histórico de los edificios pendientes de rehabilitar, a la vez que se basa en el uso responsable de los recursos naturales.

Beton Hala Waterfront – An open landscape for Belgrade / Erik Giudice Architects

Beton Hala is today an open and spontaneous cultural hub. The new building designed by Erik Giudice Architects assumes this identity and provides more space for spontaneity and creativity.

The layout for the Waterfront Center takes it’s departing point from the linear structure of the existing Beton Hala. By concentrating the program on a linear strip, a park is created towards the Castle and a large multi activity promenade along the river.

The new structure is highly transparent, letting through views from the river towards the Castel and from the Castel towards the river. The structure becomes a transparent filter between two complementary urban public spaces: the park and the river promenade. On ground level several outdoor pedestrian passages connect the park and the promenade. The building adds a vertical dimension to the horizontality of the site, reflecting the multifaceted and diverse identity of Belgrad and its cultural life. The building becomes a stage for multiple expressions.

Through its linear layout the building leaves a generous space for open-air activities in particular for exhibitions, concerts, events. The buildings elevations become the visual and acoustical backdrop for the open-air stages that can be located on its two sides. The building is designed as a vertical public space, with large open air ramps that makes it possible to reach the top level, the viewing platforms and the connecting bridge to the castle without entering the commercial functions.

Two outdoor promenades goes through the building, while the urban landscape progressively unveils. The promenades culminates on the top terrace with a spectacular view on the river and the Belgrade skyline.

An Icon for Belgrade

The dynamic expression of the Center adds a new icon to the Belgrade waterfront. The building’s materiality creates a powerful contrast between the exposed smooth concrete and the crystalline glazed envelope. The enclosures are transparent and reflecting, dematerializing the limits between inside and outside.

The building is an efficient engine, it’s structural design and it’s open plans gives an unlimited flexibility in time and space. Movable and sliding facades and partition walls make it possible to unite or separate spaces according to the needs of each function, event and program. The buildings structure is conceived as a flexible shelf that can accommodate a great variety of functions both cultural and commercial.

The exhibition spaces are concentrated in the north-western part of the structure, as the rest of the building they are characterized by a high degree of flexibility. Depending on the type of exhibition the exterior walls will either be opaque or transparent. The terraces that are connected to the exhibition spaces can be used for outdoor exhibitions and related events.

The commercial spaces are located in the south eastern part of the structure. These spaces can be subdivided in several independent units in order to obtain a great degree of flexibility in it’s uses and to respond to the needs of a wide variety of commercial activities such as cafés, restaurants, shops etc. The building has several natural auditoriums through its inclined surfaces and ramps. Movable acoustic deflectors and stage sets make it possible to adapt these spaces for musical or theatrical performances.

The identity of the building as a support for ephemeral events is integrated in the building’s design. The building is conceived as a toolbox for the users, visitors and artists.

Technical description, sustainability and energy concept

By stacking the functions, the building’s footprint is reduced, which gives place to a large green park, contributing in an essential way to the sustainability of the project. The exposed concrete structure gives a high inertia to the building which acts as a thermal regulator: storing heat during winter and coolness during summer. The interior spaces are protected by a double envelope that acts as an efficient thermal buffer, using passive means to reduce the energetic needs of the building. High quality double glazing creates an efficient thermal skin. The slabs have a integrated insulation which provides total continuity in the insulating envelope. During cold periods the double skin provides a powerful insulation and reduces the need for heating. Through the glazed envelope the sun provides passive heating. In intermediate periods with good climatic conditions the sliding glass facades can be opened and the interior spaces benefits from natural ventilation.

During hot periods the space between the two envelopes is ventilated and integrated, mechanized textile sun screens between these two envelopes protect the interior from the sun radiation, keeping the coolness. During the night a free-cooling system is adopted, using the high inertia of the concrete structure to store coolness that is progressively restored during the day.

Description of the project:

Drawing upon Dutch architectural heritage, West 8's plan for Borneo Sporenburg was inspired by villages on the former Zuiderzee, where small, intimate houses descend towards the water. Borneo Sporenburg masterplan was a residential brief of 2500 dwellings, set those two peninsulas as one planning area, dictating a high density of housing. In numbers the project, according the C.A.B.E, is described as:
• Average density: 100 dwellings per hectare (the 600 dwellings in the three large housing blocks bring up the average density)
• Number of dwellings: 2,500 for Borneo Sporenburg / 17,000 for the Eastern Docklands
• Client: City of Amsterdam
• Designer: masterplan by West 8;
• The individual units were designed by international and local architects
• Year: 1996-2000
The whole masterplan was divided into a variety of house types, distinctive apartment blocks and the waterfront, adding character at the Borneo Sporenburg housing development and make the neighborhood easy to navigate. The masterplan was designed by West 8, however, six architectural practices were also asked to conduct a study into dwellings with ground-level entrances, investigating the possibilities for developing good neighborhood areas with a pleasant environment.

The city of Lille in Northern France aims to develop into a business center rivaling London or Brussels. OMA, the office of Rem Koolhaas, has given form to this ambition in the Euralille master plan. It was a largescale and complex design assignment. Here at the NAI, The Euralille dossier - part of the OMA archive - has been inventoried and is now accessible.

World-famous Projects
Twenty years ago, OMA donated a number of project dossiers to the NAI. It was an exceptional acquisition, since it was the first time that work on this scale from a young, still practicing architectural firm was incorporated into the collection. The archive has been expanded twice since then, in 1988 and 1994. In 1994, the first foreign projects were acquired, including Euralille. OMA has since managed to complete more and more world-class projects outside the Netherlands. The OMA archive now contains forty-four projects, comprising thousands of sketches, drawings and models.

Strategic Location
In 1988, OMA was commissioned to design the master plan for Euralille, which involved the old Lille Flandres train station, as well as the planned Gare TGV Lille Europe station. Lille, an industrial city with a high unemployment rate, saw an opportunity to win a prominent spot on the map of the new Europe. Its strategic location at the junction of TGV lines connecting Paris, London and Brussels would make Lille the crossroads of Europe. The fast TGV links would bring the millions of people residing in these cities closer together and Lille would be the theoretical center of a new superagglomeration.

Extra Large
Lille's Municipal Council anticipated a huge demand for conference and congress halls, offices, hotels, shops and entertainment centers. These large-scale ambitions had to be expressed in the overall plan and in the architecture. Developing a new district of this size is an extremely complex undertaking. Koolhaas wrote in S, M, L, XL about the commission he gained: "The only reason we were not completely paralyzed was that we never believed the project would actually happen. So we approached it by saying: okay, we're shocked. We're surprised. So let's be hyper-shocked, and hypersurprised and take this as a pretext for a Freudian flight forward. This thing is so complicated that we are going to exacerbate the complication to reach incredible levels of complexity. Then, either the project won't happen, or we'll be fired."

Large-scale Elements
Euralille is made up of several elements: the Triangle des Gares, the TGV station, the Espace le Corbusier, a park and the Grand Palais (also known as Congrexpo). The Triangle des Gares, designed by Jean Nouvel, contains shops, offices, homes and a theater. The Gare TGV Lille Europe (by Jean-Marie Duthilleul, architect of the French railway company SNCF), consists of a station with two towers above it: the Tour Credit Lyonnais by Christian de Portzamparc and the Tour WTC by Claude Vasconi. The park is a design by Gilles Clément. Within the overall urban plan, OMA has been responsible for the design of the Grand Palais (1990-1994), a center for congresses, exhibitions and major concerts.

Visible Infrastructure
The plan also delineates links to public transportation facilities, the layout of the public spaces, the street layout, parking facilities, the conversion of the périphérique (ring road) into an underpass, and the areas between and bordering the elements of the plan. As a junction of various transportation systems, the project is firstly an organization of the infrastructure and presents itself as such. The existing infrastructure is emphatically visible in what Koolhaas calls the "Piranesian space", an area 'cut out' of the parking garage which reveals the complexity of the infrastructure by simultaneously offering a view of the motorway, over the train station and subway and into the garage. By partially opening up the tunnel tube, the TGV is visible from the city.

The Grand Palais was initially designed as a building that acted as a bridge connecting the new city center with the old urban core. The oval design that was ultimately built does not have this connective function and has less of a relationship to the surrounding area. Yet here as well, the infrastructure has become part of the architecture. This is true not only because traffic can penetrate deep into the building, but especially because the aesthetics of the structure are reminiscent of infrastructural works such as bridges, overpasses and parking garages.

The Euralille file contains a large number of sketches, drawings and correspondence as well as several models. Besides documents by OMA, there are designs drawn by other architects who made their contribution to the urban design plan, such as Jean Nouvel, Christian de Portzamparc and Claude Vasconi. The archive thereby offers outstanding insights into the origins and further elaboration of the master plan. Of particular note are the 'booklets' OMA uses - sets of A3 copies regarding a proposal or design - that nicely illustrate how designs developed. For example, it is easy to see the choices made during the different variants of the oval version of the Grand Palais. Moreover, the complete construction dossier for this project is included in the dossier.

Multifunctional Futuristic Bridge from Korea

Bridges are a crucial architectural structure, but oftentimes they only serve one purpose – linking one landmass to another. Not so with firm Planning Korea’s vision for a new multi-level, multi-use, greenery filled bridge for Seoul.

Called Paik Nam June Media Bridge, it is is a mega-structure over the han river that aims to efficiently expand the city fabric on to the water. with a total length of 1080 meters, the bridge connects the dangi-li power plant, which is currently being redeveloped into a public cultural space, and the national assembly building to the south. The design proposal is a largely sculpted form with fluctuating curves and volumes, serving as a park, meeting space, mall, museum and more. In addition to adding new green space to the city, the whole bridge would be covered with solar panels to generate its own energy.

Metropol Parasol was given this contemporary organic design to explore the potential that the Plaza de la Encarnacion becomes the new fashionable, modern-day urban center. The Metropol Parasol’s function as a unique organic urban space within the crowded and dense fabric of the medieval city center of Seville allows for a variety of activities to be performed. The exceedingly developed infrastructure aids in triggering the movement at the square, thus transforming it into a hive of activity –a social and cultural hub where both residents, visitors and tourists can gather under the architecturally motivating ‘crown-like waffle’.

The Metropol Parasol scheme with its imposing timber structure offers a range of attractions and amenities to be used by the public. Such functions include an archaeological museum, a farmers market, an elevated plaza, and multiple bars and restaurants underneath and inside the parasols, as well as a panorama terrace on the upper level of the parasols.

Can parametric architecture be considered Architecture? Two of the eVolos 2011 Competition finalists, Patrick Bedarfand and Dimitrie Stefanescu would say so. Their C:Strip can be described as a singular manifesto for meaningful use of computational techniques.

With the assistance of software analysis and various datascapes capturing different environmental influences, the design evolves into a multi-layered architectural object of almost permeable urban quality.

Ecotect was used in processing wind speed and insulation grids, calculating the optimal position of apertures and photovoltaics. In order to avoid disrupting the existing pedestrian flows and visual parameters, circulation analysis programmed in Processing/Java used starting parameters gathered by local observations. Functional distribution was carried out with careful attention to visual trajectories, relying on DepthMap calculations. Centric distribution of functions was replaced with grouping of facilities along motion paths, allowing not only spread of data, but also creating new information through societal behaviour.

Thus, two systems evolved: folding umbrellas with the ability to harvest grey water and heat energy, and the other situated inside the body of the object. Distribution of both depends on levels of necessity for adaptation along the strip area.

C: Strip confirms that, when used as tools for innovative concepts, new design techniques can play a significant role in shaping future architecture. However, lack of critical and reasoned introspection in implementing these design trends often results in superficial and utopian experiments in form. Consequently, it alienates young practitioners and experienced professionals, making it look less as architectural avantgarde and more as something Han Solo would fly.

They are involved in aprox. 54 flagship projects, and now they are starting a mixed use building in Bryghusgrunden, one of the few undeveloped remaining areas of Copenhagen, Denmark with the potential to link the city to the waterfront. And guess who they choose for this project: OMA.

But what´s interesting in this project is the mixed of use. Housing, offices, public spaces and parking are put together with the Danish Architecture Center, with its own exhibition areas, research facilities, an auditorium, conference rooms, a bookstore and a café. It´s architecture meets one of it´s own key subject of study: mixed use.

Acapulco Bay Bridge

This colossal bridge design by Mexico City based BNKR Arquitectura is a unique approach to the problem of project financing. Knowing the municipal government of Acapulco wouldn’t be able to fund a three-kilometer bridge, BNKR thought to attract private investments by transforming the supporting structure into habitable spaces. Without a bridge to span it, the Bay of Acapulco is extremely inconvenient to round. The bridge would complete a loop around the bay and connect to existing highways and roads.

The roadway and parking for the bridge is set within a square tube that splits the superstructure from the support system below. The top of this is covered in walkways, bikepaths and green space. The triangular support structures house the habitable spaces above and below this main artery. The bridge is set upon island-like bases that could act as docks for watercraft and allow inhabitants and visitors to enjoy the bay at water level.

Few contemporary architects have designed habitable bridges and only a handful of the bridges have been built. Steven Holl has experimented with the idea in various projects and Zaha Hadid designed one to span the River Thames in 1996, but as a whole the idea has yet to fully be embraced in the modern era. In Medieval Italy many multi-use bridges were constructed, the most famous surviving example being the Ponte Vecchio in Florence. The Ponte Vecchio however has shops across it and not homes.

Algunos de los programas nuevos son canchas de baloncesto, un "range" de golf, patinaje de hielo, gymnasio, espacios recreacionales para niños, restaurantes, entre otros.

We’re happy to share JAJA Architcts’ lastest project – a proposal for a moon bridge that intends to unify the waterfront city of Kaohsiung for their Maritime and Culture Center. For the competition, the architects focused on the city’s love of the river, creating a form that gracefully sweeps across the Love River adding programmatic activities and a programmed landscape to the riverfront.

Typical of JAJA’s work, the proposal offers a simplistic breakdown of community’s urban needs and satisfies these concerns with efficient solutions. Divided by the river, the site take full advantage of the water as it serves as “the spine of the city where the urban spaces along the water stages a variety of markets, cafés and music events.”

The spine of public life has greatly influenced JAJA’s proposal as their moon bridge seeks to extend this spine across the river. The proposal connects to the adjacent park developments and stretches itself from each end of the “U”-shaped site. The Maritime Culture and Pop Music Center will actually extend from street level across the river forming the moon bridge.

The current public amenities of the world-famous Hoover Dam in the United States consist of a viewing platform, a bridge, and a gallery scattered around the entire site. This project aims to reconfigure these programs by merging them into a single vertical super structure.

One of the main purposes of the project is to allow the water from the upstream river to engage directly with the visitors through a series of containers. A hanging tower above the 700-foot drop into the Black Canyon would be used as gallery and a vertical aquarium.
